I, unfortunately, had an appointment for a colonoscopy this morning, with all of its inherent awkwardness, and then I was greeted by Lisa. She immediately asked me a few questions that led to more questions and eventually to a bed. I was very apprehensive, about the discomfort regarding the procedure and the fact that a camera, cauterizer, suction tube, and multiple staff member's eyeballs would be 3 feet or more up my bare bottom and then magnified on a big screen, but she carried on with so much kindness and information I immediately felt I was in the hands of a consummate professional. She read me disclosures, handed me a large laminated information sheet, made sure I was warm, comfortable, and poked my arm once ever so gently that I soon knew everything would be ok.
I'm sure these details are the norm on your end and the procedure is overall a non-event, but as the patient, I wasn't so patient. It's just incredibly embarrassing to undergo such an awkward procedure, along with all the deeply personal questions, disclosures, and eyeballs 3 feet deep.
I have never met Lisa, prior to today, but her beauty and depth of knowledge had me grateful, for the fact that we crossed paths. I realize my doctor must have performed millions of colonoscopies over his 37-year tenure, but hands down Lisa is one-in-a-million in a category of her own. Lisa has a doctorate in interpersonal relationships. What I initially viewed as unfortunate, quickly became a spectacular experience.
