Diane is the epitome of TOP NOTCH NURSING! I have literally been wowed on many occasions when I was privileged to witness her deliver care to critically ill patients. What I appreciate most is that she cares for her patients as if she were caring for her very own loved one. Diane takes no short cuts, rather she gives time, attention, and care to her patients. It is so very important to recognize Nurses like Diane because the care they provide has become a rarity in the medical field today. Nurses like Diane are exactly what sets UPMC above other health care systems. She has a wealth of knowledge that she shares so freely, she is one of the most awesome preceptors because she is patient, kind, smart, and keeps herself abreast of new things happening in the field. She is like a mother to the younger/newer Nurses on the unit as she guides and teaches them. Diane is very often the RN who is in charge on the unit and she handles every situation gracefully, she is capable of making good decisions when timing is critical. Her innate leadership qualities shine through every single day that she on the unit.
When it comes to direct patient care, I have no doubt in my mind that she is one of the best in the system. Many patients in this unit are intubated or comatose and Diane is so compassionate and respectful with them. She talks to them and explains what she is doing to them although they cannot respond. Diane takes pride in the condition of her patients both medically and physically where hygiene is concerned. Diane cleans patients mouths like a dental hygienist, takes care of their feet like a podiatrist, she cares for their hair like a beautician. Diane is a true advocate for her patients as well, when she something questionable, she investigates to be sure that the medical team is on the same page and that the best decision is being made for the patient. Diane is also awesome in dealing with family members who are anxious and afraid, friends, and family of the patient are always thankful to have their loved ones under her care. Many Nurses work on units to gain experience as a bedside Nurse and then move on to something else. Diane, however, told me that her heart and soul are in bedside Nursing and that she would never want to do anything else. Her passion is evident, her skill is well respected and greatly appreciated by her peers, patients, and their families.
