Within 33 days my dad went from living at home alone to dying in a nursing home under hospice care. During those 33 days he was in Poudre Valley Hospital's ER on 3 different occasions, spent four days in PVH Oncology, spent four days in PVH Neurology, spent nine days in PVH Acute Care Rehab, spent four days in Centre Skilled Nursing Facility, and finally spent his remaining time under hospice care.
We saw many, many nurses during that timeframe and Nick Bene was, by far, the most impressive. He was on top of everything. He was extremely prompt with medications - especially pain medications, which we appreciated very much. This meant that my dad did not suffer as much while he was under Nick's care.
Nick was also an excellent communicator. He was not only good at communicating with my dad, who was hallucinating, mumbling, and mostly incoherent, but he communicated thoroughly with the nursing home, so they knew about him before he arrived. Nick read Dad's chart and he knew what was going on, he knew what we wanted and didn't want in terms of treatments and interventions.
Honestly, when I left Dad in Nick's care at the end of the day, I felt relieved that Dad was in good hands. Nick was upbeat, helpful, professional, caring, kind, patient, and empathetic. If I am ever hospitalized I would be extremely fortunate to get a nurse as excellent as Nick. He is the cream of the crop and I believe he is a true DAISY Nurse!
