This DAISY Award is for two nurses from two patients who are sisters. On June 14, 2012, Bianca and Latina came in to Labor and Delivery. Bianca came in for possible labor and her sister Latina accompanied her as support. They were both pregnant and due within weeks of each other. Latina was just here with her sister but started having contractions so she got admitted also for possible labor. They both were going to have their baby on the same day! Chris Ashley RNC was taking care of Bianca and Amy Guest RN was taking care of Latina.
We had just recently gotten a telemetry monitor in Labor and Delivery. This is a fetal monitor that can be worn around the patient’s neck so that she can walk around or move rooms. The patients’ mother was distraught because she wanted to be there for both daughters. The nurses used critical thinking and came up with a plan to make it possible for both sisters to be in the same room and for their mother to be part of both of their experiences. Latina was in active labor and Bianca was in early labor, so, Bianca wore the telemetry monitor and was able to be on the couch in Latina’s room. The nurses collaborated with the physicians and the family to make this possible. Bianca was able to stay in the room when her sister Latina delivered her baby. This family was ecstatic and so overjoyed that this was possible. The sisters were featured on the WFAA news station the following day.
