I wanted to recognize Vicki McSherry from HV-6. I was a patient on the unit for 23 hour observation and she went out of her way to help me get home quickly. On May 28th I had a long ER visit at MVH South which was not so pleasant. When I was transferred to main campus I was quite apprehensive. I was admitted to HV- 6, room 613. My initial contact was with Crystal Whitaker at 9:30 pm. She was kind, caring and oriented me to my room and went over what I should expect. As a new nurse on orientation, I was impressed because she was great.
The next morning I met Vicki, a nurse with 20 plus years experience. Vicki greeted me with a newspaper and a smile. She responded to my concerns that I wanted to get home quickly that day as all my tests were negative. Vicki agreed and said “I’ll see what I can do for you”. She left the room, called the hospitalist and informed him that I wanted to go home. Vicki followed up informing me of what she had done and that she would keep calling the doctor if needed.
The hospitalist came to see me within an hour and wanted me to stay until the cardiologist saw me. Even though I did not want to wait, he patiently explained his rationale. After the hospitalist left, Vicki came back to the room to tell me she had called the cardiology nurse practitioner to get the ball rolling. The cardiologist showed up within two hours and told me I could leave, but explained the hospitalist would need to dismiss me. Again, Vicki called the hospitalist to move things along and got a verbal order for me to go home.
Vicki granted a “wish” to leave early that day, but stayed over to make sure I would get to go home. When I said “aren’t you supposed to be home?” she said “I would never leave until you got out of here”. I feel Vicki went beyond what was expected of her without being asked. She put my needs first without question in a professional, caring manner. Vicki has great communication skills and took time to know me and my family. She did simple things such as sitting on the bed, talking about my family, and keeping me updated. Vicki is a nurse that others should follow if you want to make a difference in people’s lives. This nurse deserves to be recognized. Please consider her for the DAISY Award and tell her “Thanks for making a difference”!
