Thought I would share a great "success" story from the Geriatric Psychiatry unit. We had a female patient who was discharged yesterday, after spending many months on the unit. This woman is Russian, and spoke primarily Russian, especially at the beginning of her stay. She was extremely anxious and depressed and spent much of her time initially in her room. Her only communications with staff consisted of anxious grunting/moaning.
The team worked very closely with her over the months. We learned that she had been a piano teacher for 40 years, among other things. She began to get dressed and be out of her room more. We got Russian books for her to read, and even some Russian treats for her. Then, our music therapist spent some extra time with her. Over the last few weeks, we even got sheet music for her, and arranged time for her to be in our lounge practicing piano. By the end of her stay, she was playing "concerts" for the staff and other patients. She even encouraged other patients to come out and attend groups. This was a total team effort, and we all felt so happy when she was able to be discharged on Monday.
This was an amazing team effort with a fabulous outcome.
