Dave Wolcott is the department's Case Manager in the Emergency Room. A disabled person presented to the ER having broken her ankle after taking a tumble out of her electric wheelchair while watching fireworks. EMS was called but unable to transport the patient's wheelchair in the ambulance. Patient's wheelchair, therefore, had to be left behind at the Cultural Center. The patient lives alone at home with the assistance of home care. She was not able to return home without her wheelchair and had no one to go pick it up for her.
Dave went to check on the patient's wheelchair, and to ride it to the patient's apartment with her permission. He then had to jog back to retrieve his car and eventually returned to the hospital to finish his shift. Dave made sure this patient was able to get into her chair and that her home health aide was agreeable to continue to provide support to the patient before he left her at her apartment.
Dave definitely went the extra inch. He not only assisted this patient, but he also helped the ER in problem-solving a difficult situation and prevented a social admission.
