Rachel called me and said she had a lady that she was discharging from triage this morning due to being in a wreck yesterday. Her significant other had (I think) rode a train to Charlotte with 3 children and obtained an Uber ride to the hospital to meet the patient. When he got here he did not have money to pay for the Uber ride and when on the unit, ask Rachel for money to pay the driver. Apparently, he asked other staff, and no one had the extra $15.00 to give him. I checked out several different options, but he continued to need the currency for the driver. After talking to him and the patient, Rachel and I walked out and went into an empty room. Rachel told me what she thought she should do. She said a couple of weeks ago at her church the congregation was given something like a blessing envelope with different amounts of money in it and the congregation was to give it to someone that was in need. Rachel said she had the money in her billfold and she felt this was the right time to give it, and that is what she did. Both the man and patient cried, due to the fact that his billfold was in the wrecked car, at a junk yard. We talked about what if it was not true, what he was saying. I said he will have to answer to not telling the truth because Rachel was giving from the heart and helping them. What a wonderful role model. Rachel always appears to be such a dedicated employee and nurse to the patients and to the organization. I have deep respect for Rachel, University is fortunate to have her.
