Nurses are often known for their kindness and compassion to their patients and families. On this occasion, I witnessed Paige Whitlock demonstrate this kindness to unknown people in need. Sadly, a young life was lost. Brain death had been determined. The family was desperate for something good to come of this sad situation and requested the organs be donated to Life link. Paige worked tirelessly to try and make this happen. She grieved with the family when we were told this would not be possible for this patient. In the end, Paige and I ended up in a meeting with a person who would help us to assure that this did not happen again and that a family would be able to donate organs without the barriers we had encountered that night. Paige stood up for those unknown to her, a countless number of patients remaining on the transplant list. I appreciate her courage and compassion far more than words can say. She is a bright light in our organization who continually strives for exceptional care and for nursing staff to have all the tools they need to assure we can provide the great skill we are known to have.
