Kristen has been a part of the GSU family for a couple years on the night shift, but this was my first time working with her on day shift, and I was blown away at her persistence when advocating for her patient. Kristen's patient has been on the floor for over a week and was eagerly anticipating her discharge. Upon Kristen's assessment of the patient's wound and looking at trends in the patient's labs, she expressed concerns to the resident team that the patient was not ready for discharge, despite their eagerness to send the patient home. Kristen received a lot of pushback from the team wanting to discharge the patient home, but Kristen never gave up advocating for the patient or her husband. She began asking for the opinions of other nurses around her and got the charge to put eyes on the patient, ultimately talking the team into doing what was best for the patient and keeping her at least one more night for observation. In nursing school, they always told us to trust our gut when we felt something didn't feel quite right with a patient. As a new nurse its hard to explain that feeling, and even harder to stick to it when questioning something coming from a physician. I was so proud of Kristen for sticking with her gut feeling and advocating for her patient. Especially when the patient wasn't in the place to advocate for herself. It's nurses like Kristen who are willing to stand up for their patients, that help create the best possible patient outcomes. We are so lucky to have her on our team, and I can't think of anyone more deserving of the DAISY Award!
