In radiology, we frequently have patients who undergo multiple repeat procedures for cancer symptom management. Unfortunately, these procedures can be long, painful and cause anxiety to the patient. Recently, we had a patient come in for her cancer symptom management. She expressed how unsure she was to go through with the procedure since she had so much pain last time. Katie consoled her and explained what would be expected throughout each step of the process. She coached her through the "rough spots" and held her hand during the intense two-hour case. After the procedure was over, the patient wept with Katie and told her how grateful and thankful she was to have such a caring nurse during this difficult time. Katie is the epitome of what nursing is. Her compassion and caring radiate from within. Katie is a true hero who does not wear a cape.
