I just received one of the nicest phone calls as a manager in a long time. A patient’s daughter called to commend Steve Shoffner for the wonderful job he did today while visiting her mother. Daughter explained her mother has a multitude of medical problems ranging from pancreatic cancer, seizures, disorientation, and UTI. She stated she was in tears this morning as her mother would not drink or take her medications. She stated Steve showed up and her mother listened to what he said. She stated Steve was able to get her mother to take her medications and drink fluids. She stated Steve had a very calming effect on her mother. She also stated, “He is a wonderful nurse, so caring, so considerate, and so calming.” She requested Steve to be her mother’s case manager. This patient lives in Burlington County and Steve typically works in Gloucester County but he was helping the staff out in Burlington County with homecare visits. Steve readily stated, “I would love to case manage her care; I have no problem driving up there to see her.” In addition, Steve also agreed to case manage another case in Burlington County earlier in the day. Steve is a very positive team player and always volunteers to help out. Need help with on call coverage, Steve is there. Steve also takes the time to help mentor new nurses. He acts as a preceptor and shares his skills and insights to the staff on what works and what does not work. He is a true asset to the organization.
