Dena is a registered nurse in our newborn nursery who was assisting a new mom with skin-to-skin care and breastfeeding. This birth was following a difficult delivery and mom had not eaten for almost 24 hours. It was after midnight when she began to want something to eat.
In the midst of COVID-19, visitors were not allowed to come and go from the hospital, therefore her husband could not leave to get her food, and after-hours the hospital had limited choices that did not appeal to her. Dena overheard this conversation and offered the patient and her husband an unopened pizza that had just been delivered to the nursing staff.
The patient said, "Dena went above and beyond her job to get me food so I could take my needed medication when she didn't have to do that. Dena was so kind to us; she is a wonderful nurse and we are so grateful she was our baby's nurse that night."
