Not to long ago we had Mr. M on our unit after his esophagectomy surgery developed complications. Mr. M returned to the unit from the floor having aspiration pnuemonia progressing into ARDS. Mr M. was touch and go for a while but eventually turned the corner for the better but was very deconditioned and had a minimum of 5 drains (chest tubes, NG tubes, etc) at a time and on isolation. Mr. M was very difficult to manage on building strength back. Jeremy saw this as an opportunity to really put a holistic care approach in assisting Mr. M in gaining back some quality of life. Jeremy coordinated with PT/OT and developed a plan of care focused on a long term goal of getting Mr. M walking again. Jeremy also asked if Mr. M could be 1:1, even though he didn't meet criteria, at least on day shift in order to have all his activities completed so he could get a good night of sleep. This included getting OOB 3 times a day, first just standing at the bedside, then to the chair then ambulating, also having time outside his room to the vestuble or the end of the hall for 30 minutes, and all his dressing changes. After Mr. M transfered out of the unit to the floor Jeremy would visit him frequently and help the floor nurses with his care from time to time. Not many of us thought Mr. M would ever make it out of the unit, let alone make it home. To our surprise Mr. M made it home to his wife, kids, grandkids, and farm. Jeremy was thanked personally from the family and Dr. Reed, the attending in being the primary force behind his recovery. Unfortunately, Mr. M passed away last month and Jeremy was recognized in his obituary. The world needs more nurses like Jeremy, a person who takes pride and truly cares for his patients and their families.
