My son, K was referred by his pediatrician to come to the Emergency Department to be seen for a persistent elevated temperature, swollen tonsils, and concern for a tonsillar abscess. We experienced a minimal wait time and were taken back to a room where we met Mr. Steven Giompoletti, RN. Within minutes Steven introduced himself, confirmed why we were in the ED, did an assessment, took vital signs, asked about our needs, and took the time to talk to K about his interests. Steven's approach helped K and me to make an excellent connection on the front end and feel confident and assured that he was both capable of and invested in helping take care of K. Throughout the ED experience that day, Steven made many visits to K's room. In each of these visits, he would provide updates, let us know the next steps in the process, answer questions, perform the clinical pieces needed for K's care, get him ready for CT and just make time pass. He told us stories, listened to ours, and addressed our concerns as we waited on CT results and our ENT procedure. He provided K with comfort in the form of warm blankets, IVs to rehydrate him, ibuprofen for pain, and kind words of support during K's suffering.
I have been a nurse since 1978, a neonatal nurse practitioner since 1994, and have worked at ACH since 1984. I have known and practiced with many nurses over my career. In my opinion, Steven Giompoletti, and his performance in his role of ED RN, truly exemplifies the honorable nursing practice of the highest degree. I would like to commend and thank Steven for providing the kind of nursing care that everyone wants to receive and speaks to all the needs of sick children and families who come through the doors of Arkansas Children's Emergency Department. The other important and impressive piece I learned about Mr. Giompoletti was his passion for mentoring and training new emergency department nurses. He shares his own personal goal with each new nurse as they come under his tutelage. His goal for the novices in the weeks of time he spends teaching them is to bring them as close as he can to a high level of confidence and competence in ED nursing practice. He does this by teaching them as many of the important things he has learned in his 20+ years of his nursing practice. This aptitude for teaching others with such passion and willingness to share what he has learned across his nursing career speaks to Steven's passion, dedication, and investment in the next generation of nurses who will care for our children and families. What a beautiful gift Steven is giving to our nurses, patients, and families. It is for these reasons that Steven is a DAISY Nurse.
