I was taking care of a pediatric patient whose mother towards discharge informed me she could not afford the required OTC Motrin medicine that would be needed for her child. I did all of my teaching and care and placed a call to case management to see what resources were available for this mother/patient. As we were waiting to see what would come from that phone call the mother informed me she didn’t even know if she had enough gas to get her and the child home. I continued to support her and said let’s see what comes from case management. In the meantime, Marni Zaborac, another PACU nurse, was able to slip away to Orchard Pharmacy and bought this mother a bottle of Children’s Motrin. While she was away, Tina Ross from Case Management came down and said there really is not any official resource to help this patient and family. She went in and spoke with the patient/mother and handed her a $10.00 bill for gas as Marni handed her the bottle of Motrin. The patient’s mother was overwhelmed, tearful, and left saying this is why she loves coming to Community Hospital. The nurses really truly care here.
