I would like to Nominate Wesley Smith, RN for the Daisy award. He really goes the extra mile in providing care. When I first entered the hospital he was very courteous, professional and welcoming. He was able to get an IV in me on the first try even though my veins were collapsed and I had not drank or eaten in 4-5 days. Later in my stay I had received several days’ worth of IV fluids and had other multiple nurses try to put in an IV line but was unable. When I was going to have my endoscopy done, the other nurses tried to insert 4 IV lines in and were not successful. They had to call the head charge nurse to finally get one in me. I wish Wes was over in the GI building that day!
On the second day of my hospital stay, I had an allergic reaction to Zofran, causing an almost Bell ‘s palsy type reaction. I could only use the left side of my mouth; my eyes were also rolling back and my head and beating up and down very quickly. My body was convulsing and I had rigidity in my neck. Luckily, Wes was familiar with my condition of Mast Cell Disease and the common things the disease causes such as anaphylaxis, etc. He knew immediately that I was having a reaction to Zofran. He called a MET and they were able to stabilize me. He also kept a close eye on my husband, who was about to pass out after the ordeal! Wes’ reactions were very calm and collected. He was amazing.
After that, every time I had to have medication, I was nervous, so he would stay in the room and watch over me to make sure I did not have a reaction. He would reassure me that everything was going to be okay and made me feel calm and comfortable and in good hands. His knowledge of medicine, nursing, etc. was such a reassuring thing for me. The other nurses I had were good but did not make me feel near as confident with my situation as he did. He truly excels in every aspect of nursing.
On the last day of my stay, I had another nurse but he was working down the hall in 8 West. He came down to my room to check on me and my husband. He asked about my discharge and if I had any questions. He reassured me of everything and made me feel comfortable about going home, He is incredibly compassionate. He displays the amazing things for example by the simplest things such as me having issues going to the bathroom and being embarrassed. He was very respectful of me not feel like I was losing all my dignity. He put my mind at ease about it.
I feel like this letter does not even begin to explain the care that I received from Wes. It really is beyond words. I have never met a nicer, more knowledgeable, caring nurse in all of my medical history and trust me it is quite long with my disease.
