I would like to nominate Vanessa for the compassionate care that she gave my husband while he was a patient on the fifth floor. At 0400 on a Friday morning my husband was in respiratory distress and she had to call the rapid response team. During this time my husband was very scared as I was not there. In addition to not being able to breathe, he heard the team discuss the possibility of having to intubate him. During this time Vanessa sat with him reassuring him and holding his hand until everything was under control. After the RRT left, she continued to reassure him and make him comfortable. Then while still at his side, she called me and explained the events that had occurred. By the time I arrived, he was resting and breathing comfortably. She made a point to come in and make sure I was okay and asked if I had any questions. When she returned on Friday Vanessa returned to check on my husband and explained to us that she would not be taking care of him that night, as she was going to be in charge, but if he needed anything, she would be available. She introduced the nurse who would be caring for him. Needless to say, she was a perfect example of what caring, and compassion is, as well as an example of caring for patients like the one she loves the most. Her being there when I was at home and reassuring my husband during his time of distress will be something we will always remember.
