I would like to nominate Rhonda Rogers fort the DAISY Award for her patience, understanding, and kindness to patients.

I recently was a patient at CMC-Lincoln and had Rhonda as my PACU nurse after a C-Section. While I am an OB nurse and knew all I thought I needed to know for my pregnancy, I soon realized how much I depended on my doctor. I found out at 20 weeks that my OB doctor was retiring. This was a very emotional and draining pregnancy for me because of this change. However, on December 22, 2011, I came into the hospital at 0530 in labor. I was a repeat C-Section so I knew we were going to the OR. I had planned to breastfeed and wanted to be the first patient to participate in what is now known as “NAKED IN PACU”. I went for my C-Section that morning as an add on.

Later I was told it was a full day for the OR but I had no idea because I was treated like I was the only patient there. After my C-Section, as I was being wheeled to PACU, I was a little nervous because we had never taken a baby with us. Not only were we taking a baby to PACU, but a labor and delivery nurse too! Rhonda was the nurse to receive me. From the moment I saw her smiling face, she never made me and my infant feel anything but special! She was very open to my breastfeeding. She was able to do the job she needed to do plus see to all my needs that I had. I know this was a challenge because this was the first time this had happened. As a patient I could not have asked for better care. I breastfed my infant for the whole 30 minutes I was in PACU.

The reasons above would be enough to nominate Rhonda; however, it is what happened next that makes her special to me as a patient and a nurse. I returned to work 8 weeks later and my first day back I was assigned to go to the OR for a scheduled C-Section. My patient was an awesome mom who was also a repeat C-Section. Her life situation was very similar to mine and she also wanted to breastfeed in PACU. I was very curious to see what kind of reaction we would get since this had now been in place for 8 weeks. We went to the C-Section and as we rolled into PACU, I saw Rhonda. I was so happy for my patient that she was going to be her nurse. Rhonda gave the same excellent care to my patient as she did to me 8 weeks prior. We breastfed for thirty minutes again and then we went to OB.

My breastfeeding experience went exceptionally well. I am a firm believer that if moms can breastfeed in the first hour the infant will do so much better than if not. I know this is a challenge for both units but with nurses like Rhonda, we can make a truly special experience for our moms and their babies. As a patient participating in this experience, I can say it is well worth the extra time and effort it may take to make mom and baby happy.
