I would like to nominate from the PCAM Surgi Centre Prep/Recovery Unit as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. This nurse should receive the award for her clinical skills, compassionate care, and exemplary service and for her continued commitment to excellence.
The following are examples of the nominee’s extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care:
As a Clinical Level II Nurse at the PCAM Surgi Centre Prep/Recovery Unit, Nancy is committed to excellence. As a second career Registered Nurse, Nancy utilizes her skills from her previous career as a teacher (with her Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist) in her everyday practice. Nancy is very knowledgeable and skilled in the Postoperative setting, and also maintains her ER Certification from a previous job. Her kind, caring personality in addition to her wealth of knowledge make Nancy an exceptional asset to the Recovery Room at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Staff describes Nancy as a “team player” and “sweet, conscientious person” who shows a concern for her co-workers and patients. Nancy lives over 50 miles away, but can always been seen working past her shift if necessary. She is the first to send a co-worker home, and the first to offer to stay late. She is always thinking about others.
Nancy is a member of the Perianesthesia Practice Committee where she collaborates with staff from HUP’s PRA and PACU to ensure that we have the same standards of care. She is a perfect fit for this committee because she is educated on the policies of the unit and understands the importance of continuity of care among all outpatient surgery patients at HUP regardless if their procedure is performed at HUP or at the Perelman Center. Nancy knows firsthand how the outpatients are cared for at the HUP PACU because any time there is a light schedule at the Perelman Center and staff is needed to assist in the PACU, Nancy volunteers with a smile. Nancy is a hard-worker who will go where the work is even if it is outside her comfort zone. Where other nurses may be hesitant to “float” to another unit, Nancy does what is needed to meet the patient needs. She never complains when a curve ball is thrown her way and is always willing to change assignments if necessary. To say that Nancy is flexible would be a vast understatement. Nancy has also taken on the role as Hand Hygiene Champion. She does not take this role lightly and even keeps a notepad in her pocket so she does not miss observation opportunities. Nancy recognizes the importance of hand washing reducing infections and is empowered to correct staff, including doctors, if they are being non-compliant.
Nancy is a pleasure to work with at the Perelman Center Surgi Centre. She is a hard-working team player who does things for the good of the unit and her co-workers. She is an irreplaceable “unsung hero” of the Surgi Centre nursing team.
