I nominated Melissa for the DAISY Award because of the extraordinary care she gave to one of our patients in the ICU. The patient was young, sick, and scared. The diagnosis combined with the family dynamics made this case complicated and demanding. Melissa had recently been sick and recognized symptoms in the patient that were similar to the ones she had experienced. Advocating for the patient, she became the catalyst to finding out what the diagnosis and proper treatment were for the patient. It was an extremely rare disease, and it seemed quite providential that Melissa was familiar with the disease and happened to be her nurse.
Beyond her critical thinking skills, Melissa was extremely compassionate towards the family. She would constantly call the family to give them the updates. She was always one step ahead. Dr. B even called Melissa at home to thank her for going above and beyond. On her days off, Melissa would call the unit to check up on the patient. She really bonded with the patient and the family. For me, watching Melissa take care of this patient was a reminder to me of why I became a nurse and it revitalized in me the patience and empathy I always try to give my patients. Melissa is my role model.
