LMH chose to honor our first award winner at a reception during Nurses Week, on May 10, 2012. All nominees were introduced and given the nomination pin. The DAISY Award honoree was a surprise and was announced by reading the nomination letter. Below is an excerpt with paraphrasing of that letter.
“My father was in hospice at his nursing home after having surgery for an obstructed bowel.” He was transferred to LMH for care. “Within the first hour of being at your hospital, my father was resting comfortably and pain free, the first time in over 48 hours!” Your hospitalist “called my sister who lives out of state to let her know that our father was not recovering from his surgery and he instructed both of us to make plans to come home in time to say goodbye… I wanted to let you know that the nurses on 2 North are amazing and in particular, Cory Green. She was so supportive during our father’s death and called me to encourage me to come in to be with my dad. She arranged for my favorite beverage to be available in a pitcher in his room and she located some jazz CD’s (my father’s favorite kind of music) and had it playing for my father as he died. She gave my father excellent, proactive care and created a safe place for me during a scary time.” I have worked in medical education and patient support and “I can honestly say that I’ve never seen so many health care workers filled with such compassion and professionalism.”
