Each day, Mandy displays the amazing qualities that are required to be an exceptional nurse. She is consistently patient focused. Today Mandy proved to be the ultimate patient advocate.
During a medical procedure on her patient, a disagreement between two providers took place. The interaction that occurred between these providers was inappropriate, and witnessed by the patient. As the patient began to cry, Mandy interrupted the providers, and told them they needed to leave the room.
The conflict continued outside of the room, until they were escorted off of the unit. Since Mandy felt empowered enough to speak up, the patient no longer had to witness the unfortunate events. She also decreased delay for the procedure by notifying another provider immediately. The procedure was completed quickly following the incident.
Mandy also used her chain of command, to be sure that the incident was handled appropriately. She advocated for the patient by making sure AIMMC leadership addressed the concerns. Our team met with the patient the next morning, and we provided the appropriate resources for her and her family.
Though this situation was quite uncomfortable, Mandy acted as a leader. She put the patient first by speaking up. I also commend her for reporting this event. Her main concern was making sure the patient received the appropriate care and follow up.
I am proud to work with Mandy. We strive to be the nurse she is.
