Kelly gives one hundred percent whether in the ER, ICU, or any unit he is assigned. Kelly is always in the middle of any situation collaborating with other RN's, respiratory, tech's, and MD's.
I was in the ER when a 92 yr old female patient came in short of breath. The patient was fighting to breathe, literally, kicking her legs, swinging her arms, and fighting to remove her oxygen mask. Kelly leaned over and wrapped her in a tender hug and began whispering into her ear. Kelly spoke softly to her calming her as nurses ran a line, drew blood, and a EKG was performed. Even after the patient had relaxed and her o2 stats were up I saw Kelly and the patient laughing at something he had said.
On another occasion when the ER was so busy all the rooms were in use we had a stemi walk-in. The patient, a 47 yr old male, was having a heart attack. He was quickly put in a bed in the hallway and all tests were run to confirm the MI. Kelly was his nurse and had the cath lab crew and MD notified. After meds brought his pain under control all the patient could do was worry about his wife. The patient was out of state on a job site when he had chest pain and did not tell his wife he was going to the ER so she would not worry. Kelly called his wife and spoke with her assuring her that her husband was his only concern and he would do everything in his power to keep him safe. Kelly then gave the phone to the patient. By the time he went to the cath lab all he could talk about was how wonderful Kelly had been with his wife on the phone and how relieved he was that she was ok. He spoke highly of Kelly for the next few days.
This is a poor example of explaining how wonderful he is with every patient. Everyone. Young, elderly, well off, homeless, Kelly treats every patient like you would like your own cherished loved ones to be treated. He is a great example, you can see coworkers display extra compassion when he is around as if it rubs off. Always a happy expression on his face. Of course he is very competent, but he is also the total package he has a gift that is like pure sunlight, the gift of true compassion.
