Matthew was nominated by one of our employees who had a child that was being cared for by Matt, her nomination follows:
Matt demonstrates every aspect of our mission in his care. As my daughter's nurse he did all of the expected practices-Hourly Rounding, 3-ps, bedside report, etc. Where he "wow'd" me was when I, her mom (not an employee of the hospital-which he didn't know by the way) had a near melt down when they said she could go home. I was terrified that she wasn't ready and worried that her condition may get worse and we wouldn't be able to get her back fast enough to the ER. After acknowledging my fear and listening to me, he sat down with us and asked what specifically I was afraid of. I was afraid her bilateral PE could cause a stroke.
First- he did an excellent job managing up and assuring me that the physician was great and would not send her home if he didn't feel it was ok.
Second- he cleaned off the white board and drew a picture of her lungs and heart and path from those organs to the brain. He showed me how a stroke occurs and assured me that the risk was very low.
Matt, taking the time to listen, understand, empathize and educate us gave me the confidence I needed to take her home. I am so grateful for his care and to have his influence on our team at Saint Alphonsus.
