The CCU utilizes volunteers to assist with the daily needs of the unit. During one particular shift, a student volunteer was assisting a nurse in a patient room and began to feel ill. The volunteer went into the hallway and sat down, where she then passed out. Other nurses and a physician were present, Vitals were taken and a brief assessment was completed. The consensus was the that maybe she got too hot, or didn't eat enough, or something along those lines, especially given that she was just 19 years old. She was asked if she felt well enough to go home or if she wanted to go to the ER. Tae arrived about that time and voiced that she felt "something didn't feel right". She took the volunteer and hooked her up to the cardiac monitor, where she identified the volunteer was having pauses in her heart rhythm. During this time, Tae remained with the volunteer and comforted and reassured her that she would be well cared for. She was taken to the ER and an EKG revealed that she was in complete heart block and in need of surgical intervention to place a pacemaker. Tae's keen nursing skills and the "gut feeling" she gained from decades of nursing experience potentially saved the life of this young volunteer.
