We recently admitted a patient to the ICU who had been on vacation when his chronic illness took a turn for the worse. Despite our best efforts, the patient became terminally ill and our team searched for days to find a next of kin. We eventually got into contact with the patient's niece in another country who had the horrible task of agreeing to withdraw life-sustaining measures.
This patient had no friends or family present for the length of his hospitalization, so when it came time to withdraw support, the team realized one of our nurses shared the same religion as this patient. When we reached out to Mehreen, she immediately came to the patient's bedside to provide him with religious support and comfort. This sad experience touched us all, but Mehreen shared her spirit with this man who was all alone at his last moments of life.
This is what sets this hospital apart from every hospital in our community. The compassion and integrity of our team are summarized in these small moments that mean everything. Mehreen is one of our newer members of the team, and her drive to learn and become a stronger ICU nurse shines through every day. This moment touched me as a veteran nurse and filled my heart with the love she was showing a stranger.
