My mom was hospitalized following a bout with this latest strain of influenza that has been particularly deadly. Her throat had swollen, and she was intubated to keep her airway open. She remained in this state, under sedation, in the ICU for 4 days. Tiffany Song served as her nurse for two of these days and came by her room days later when she wasn't assigned to my mom's care just to check in on her. By then, my mom had been moved in the ICU from one room to another which are on opposite ends of the unit, meaning Tiffany almost literally went the extra mile to come check in on her.
While so many of the nurses that treated my mom were attentive and caring, it was Tiffany's exceptional attention to detail that stood out. As an editor, my job is to be mindful of details and her diligence with details didn't escape my notice. Although my mom was sedated, Tiffany spoke to her as if she was awake and alert the whole time, explaining everything she was doing, even if it was simply straightening a sheet. She minded the smallest details - adjusting hoses and cords, straightening socks, propping pillows - even if those things were only mildly out of sorts.
I stayed in my mom's room nearly around the clock and Tiffany was even kind enough to ask if I wanted a pillow, some coffee, or just generally checked in to see how I was doing. Most any nurse can carry out the technical, medical necessities of care, but care, real, genuine, honest care is best exemplified by a nurse like Tiffany Song.
