Ashley Keck from CSDU is outstanding in the way she helps patients in an unconditional way. As she was walking out of the hospital to leave, a patient and his granddaughter were leaving. She noticed they needed help. When she got over to them, she noticed the oxygen concentrator that had just been delivered to him stopped working. She ran up to PCU, informed the charge nurse that this patient needed to come back up and the oxygen concentrator was not working despite her efforts and the patient was starting to get short of breath. She grabbed an oxygen tank, tubing, and a wheelchair to bring the granddaughter if she had questions about what to do. Ashley called the vendor to try and troubleshoot the machine. The plan was for the granddaughter to drive the patient, who was elderly and had recently been diagnosed with leukemia, back up to Michigan so that he could be with family during his final months in life. The granddaughter was so worried she would not be able to get her grandfather home. Ashley sat down with the granddaughter and reassured her that she would make sure the oxygen tank worked and that she would be able to take him. She offered to get her some food and coffee. After a few hours back and forth, Ashley was able to get the oxygen situation resolved and the granddaughter was able to take her grandfather home. Ashley was off the clock for all of this and helped the patient and his family out of the kindness of her heart and from the pure heart of a nurse in wanting to care for others. Love and kindness like that is not something you can teach someone, but it is just in them.
