Clara cared for Mr. C who needed a heart transplant for several weeks. After his first transplant, Clara went to visit him and his wife in the ICU. I informed Clara that the first heart didn't take. She became visibly upset. She visits him not only when she is working but also on her days off. One day Clara came in on her day off and took the patient's wife to lunch away from the hospital. On this day Clara also went to visit 2 other patients she was taking care of as she knew they would be discharged before her next shift. With a light smile, she gave her patients hugs and told them she would miss them. What a great example of compassionate care. When I told Clara how nice it was of her to take Mrs. C to lunch she replied, "It's no big deal, it is what we are supposed to do."
