Luis Gutierrez took care of my mother in law. She was an amazing 88-year-old woman who was very independent prior to her hospitalization even while dealing with diabetes and lung cancer. She fell at home and fractured her right femur. She had a surgical repair done and then quickly developed C. diff due to her immunosuppressive state from being on chemotherapy for a year. She was transferred to the Medical Stepdown Unit and had the wonderful good fortune of being cared for by an amazing nurse. My mother in law deteriorated quickly and was a challenge to care for from a nursing perspective. Luis performed a special procedure that gave multiple fluid boluses and eventually had to start a neosynephrine drip. The kindness and compassion with which he delivered care was effortless and so professional. Luis collaborated care with the medical and surgical residents and kept us informed of each change in her condition. He never seemed bothered by the presence of family members all night long. Luis preserved her dignity and kept her as comfortable as possible. Luis was so attentive to my mother in law, I was amazed he had three other patients to care for. We never had to go and look for him at any point. Luis was kind enough to return to the room after giving report to the day nurse to say goodbye to my mother in law and our family. He let us know that he would not be back that night because he was off. Although my mother in law did not survive the next day, I will forever be impressed by the care she received from Luis.
