Kathleen is an Extraordinary Nurse in regard to the compassion she demonstrated towards my anxiety while my husband was a patient in the ICU unit. I believe she was the charge nurse. She was sensitive to the pain my husband was experiencing in that she ordered support from other nurses or helped him herself to perhaps make help him feel better for every symptom he was experiencing. This made my husband and I feel better in that perhaps help was on its way. Then she checked back with us later to see how he was doing. She quickly perceived the situation and the concerns I expressed to her. She has an intuitive and experienced sensitivity that allows her to understand the stress a spouse like me is experiencing. She took the time to talk to me at length as long as I needed to express my feelings and concerns. This demonstrated sensitivity and respect. She demonstrated kindness and compassion. She identified with my stress and related that she understood it and she would want to have a spouse just like me at her bedside advocating for her wellness. All nurses should understand the extreme stress and confusion a spouse and family are going through and the importance of respecting their concerns because they are representing the patient when the patient is incapable of representing themselves. The information the nurse relates is in turn related to extended family.
