My son was taken to UMUCH by ambulance after an overdose. Z has suffered from the disease of addiction for 6 years. It has been a long difficult time not only for Z but our family. Spending most of his time in and out of treatment facilities. Once Z was stable in the ER he was moved to the ICU unit and immediately put on life support. I spent the next 6 days standing over my son not knowing if he would ever come back to his family. It was horrific. And I could not have gotten through it without the fantastic caring nurses. But one, in particular, truly touched my heart and soul when I needed it the most. Susan was Z's nurse several nights of his 6 days in ICU. When she arrived at 7:00 PM for her shift and entered Z's room a feeling of peace and calmness came in with her. I would watch Susan spend the first few minutes meticulously staging the room to care for my son as if he was her own. Adjusting Z's limp body to make him more comfortable while softly telling him in a caring voice everything that she was doing. Susan's sense of calmness truly gave me the strength to endure the situation. She cared enough to ask me questions about Z. Giving the impression that she wanted to know what this 24-year-old young man was really like. It was healing for me to be able to tell her what a wonderful young man he truly is. I even showed her pictures of Z so that she could see how he really looked while living life. I will never forget one morning after sleeping for a few hours in Z's room and walking to his bedside to find him clean and laying on fresh linens. It brought me to tears. Susan never judged Z for being an addict. Her gentle touch, kind voice, and attentiveness to his lifeless body were impeccable. After a few days of not sleeping, I knew I needed to rest at home. When I mentioned this to Susan she encouraged me to do so and reassured me that she would call me immediately if any changes occurred. I was able to rest knowing that Z was in loving hands. I truly believe that the quality care that he received while in the ICU was the reason why, when God decided to give Z a second chance of life, he was able to fully recover without any further complications. Truly a miracle! Thank you, Susan, for being our angel!
