Danella Thompson has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. She is the first recipient of the award at Medical City Fort Worth, which recently became part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the profound difference that nurses make in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Thompson works the night shift in the cardiovascular intensive care unit at Medical City Fort Worth. She was selected for the DAISY Award for going above and beyond to ensure that her patient's needs were cared for. She cared for a surgical patient who is the primary caregiver for his wife, who has dementia. Overnight at the hospital, the patient was anxious and concerned about how his wife would return to the hospital the next day. On her own personal time, after working a 12-hour shift, Thompson drove to the couple's home in her own vehicle -- about 30 miles away from the hospital - to pick up the patient's wife and return her to the hospital so she could be with her husband.
"This act of kindness and service is a true example of putting our hospital's mission into action - Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life," said the Chief Nursing Officer, Damita Thompson.
