I had a total knee replacement and about 5 1/2 weeks post op I wanted to stop my narcotic pain medication, feeling that I did not need it anymore. I stopped the pills never thinking about withdrawal. The next week I began with full-blown withdrawal symptoms. I could not eat or drink anything and developed dehydration along with severe diarrhea. My physician sent me to Floyd for an admission. I live alone and could not manage at home anymore. I was sick, scared, discouraged, and very, very depressed. I met this nurse after being moved to my room and his assessment of my status was swift and spot on. He was so kind and concerned about me. He spent about 30 minutes talking with me and shared his medical insights on what was happening to me. He told me what to expect as I continued to rid my body of the medication. He had extraordinary knowledge. He did tell me I would feel better in time and I needed to hear that. I had been so sick I could not fathom that this misery would not go on and on. He worked with me to give me my meds that helped alleviate my distress. He always followed up to assure my meds had the desired effect. He talked about what I needed to do after I left the hospital. He said to stay mentally and physically active and healthy. He showed me true caring compassion and I felt that was more important than my physical care.
With his support, knowledge, and professionalism, I know I can get past this awful process and gohome lessfrightened. This will allow me to make positive changes in my overall health. My nurse was so down to earth and related to my condition without patronizing me. Floyd can be proud to have him as part of their team. He completely changed what began as a negative event to where I learned to accept where I was and feel able to continue healing at home. Thank you, Curtis, words are not enough for what you did for me.
