This particular night in my patient had a retained placenta that required a D&C. After transporting the patient from the OR into recovery the patient was taken to her labor and delivery room a little before change of shift. The patient was hooked to the cardiac monitor and was assessed closely. Her nurse was unable to get a BP reading by the automatic BP cuff. She took a manual BP and was unable to hear the BP. Rapid response was called and arrived at the patient's room quickly. Doppler obtained and brought to patient's room. The patient's BP was 62/P. Anesthesia request the patient be transported to ICU. Rapid Response states no beds available in ICU. Michelle, a previous ICU nurse, states confidently she can manage this patient on labor and delivery and will take over primary care of her. Michelle takes over care of this patient and manages her care on labor and delivery. That included placing the patient on a cardiac drip of Norepinephrine and was given 2 units of blood. The patient continued to bleed because her placenta was still intact and was unable to be extracted during the D&C.
Michelle and Rapid Response took such great care of this patient. With Michelle's knowledge and experience, she was able to stabilize this patient. She truly saved my patient's life. I wanted to recognize and commend Michelle for her patience, her strong nursing skills and her guiding behaviors that she carried through the entire time she cared for this patient. Thank you for all you do!
