Steve makes a wonderfully huge impression for the short amount of time he spends with his patients performing his tasks. To our pediatric population, he knows just the right words to say to ease not only the kiddo's minds but the parents as well. To our floor on 3 south, he is not only the cheery face that helps us but is also the hero who starts the IV after the staff has had difficulty accessing a vein. I cannot count how many times he was able to swoop in to save the day and initiate the pathway of healing for our patients. To exemplify his compassionate care, he came in on his day off to start an IV without hesitation on an infant who was stuck 7+ times after all resources were exhausted. He continues to support our team by being willing to be on standby whenever in need and we cannot be any more grateful! Thank you. We appreciate your excellence on our pediatric team.

I can say first hand that we are limited in the resources available to us in the hospital. This can become especially difficult during IV attempts on a patient with poor venous options. There are only so many times we are comfortable sticking a child before knowing we need a new set of eyes. The adult population has many other nurses they can call for help, but for us, we have one, and that is Steve. He comes in with his ultrasound machine, a big smile for the child, and always says a little prayer before he starts. He has even been known to come in on his day off to help a very sick child get IV access. I recently had to call him for help on a 21-month-old patient who had been stuck 7 times total. Although it took 2 tries for him to obtain access, he was able to do it and the child was able to start getting the medicine he needed. He left singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and that was a real comfort to all involved!
