Tammy Hawkins was nominated for the DAISY Award by one of her patients. A patient in the ED asked to speak to our ED Director. He wanted to let her know how caring Tammy was to him.
He stated he had come to the ED and was being discharged home. It was cold outside and Tammy asked him if he had a ride home. He didn't have enough money to pay for a cab and was contemplating walking. Without hesitation, Tammy told him that she didn't want him out in the cold nor did she want him to have to stay all night in the waiting room. He was so appreciative that she cared enough to use her own money for his ride home.
A nurse's caring and compassion doesn't stop once the patient is discharged. Tammy was completely present to the gentleman in front of her. She recognized that at that moment, he needed more than the prescriptions he was given and she stepped in to help him.
This is not an isolated case for Tammy. Her peers will share that she is always willing to help. She comes to work with a smile on her face and regardless of how hectic the ED is, she treats her patients with respect and dignity and ensures that they know they are not just another number.
We thank Tammy for being fully present to her patients and recognizing their needs and taking the actions necessary to make a positive impact on their lives. She is truly extraordinary!
