Each quarter AdventistHealth Portlandpresents The DAISY Award to an extraordinary nurse. Randy Foster, RN, Telemetry, is the recipient of our most recent DAISY Award. Randy was nominated by the daughter of one of our patients.

We had the very fortunate opportunity to meet Randy as he came on Thursday morning to take care of my mother. Even more fortunate, we had him for Friday and Saturday as well.
Randy is an exceptional nurse and human being. The list is long of the things he did in those days to make us feel comfortable and safe. Randy is extremely intelligent and took the time to explain and educate us. He was an excellent listener when we voiced concerns, and even shared some of his own personal story, which let us know that he's a normal human being just like us. Randy validated medicines every time and checked when there was a discrepancy. He was always attentive to my mom's needs and really listened to us both when we had questions.
Randy was so gentle and kind, even while getting things done that were not necessarily pleasant. He made sure I could be present and assist with my mom, which allowed us both to feel more calm and secure. Randy also used humor and joking to form a connection and keep things light. Randy is self-assured, dependable, and warm, and his smile is real and comes through in his eyes.
All of the attributes that Randy exhibited during our stay made me feel secure in knowing that my mother was safe while on Randy's watch. And most importantly, she felt safe. I was actually able to leave for a couple of hours on Friday without having someone else there to watch; it is very difficult for me to trust others with my mom's care. Unfortunately, over the last 21 years, she has had a number of health occurrences, many life-threatening like this one, and she has had some less than suitable care. Those situations have left me not very trusting when it comes to leaving my mom's care to others. Additionally, my mom is a retired Oncology RN who practices for 34 years in both hospital and clinical settings. These experiences have resulted in us having a great many instances to use as a comparison to Randy's caregiving. We cannot say enough good things about him, both as a person and an RN. Randy is a very special member of your healthcare team. Adventist Medical Center and their patients lucky enough to be cared for by him are very so fortunate to have him working there.
