Delani was the nurse working on the Neurological - Intensive Care Unit where my father was a patient. From the first time I had an encounter with Delani I felt she was a special type of nurse. Whenever I came in to visit my father, I notice that she was the nurse that other nurses always looked up to, ask her for assistance or to validate their concerns. Every time I came to the ICU to visit my father and realizing Delani was his nurse for the day; my mind was at ease knowing he was in great hands.
One day while at the hospital, Delani was going about her normal day or as I call it "a day of a nurse" when I received a phone call from my 80-year-old grandmother. She was telling me that she thought she was having a stroke. Once I ended the call, Delani notice I had a concerned/worried look on my face. I informed her I had just spoken with my grandmother who felt she was having a stroke. Delani spoke in a calm voice and stated, "maybe you should leave and go check on your grandmother". She reassured me my father would be fine and she would notify me if anything changed". She also gave me a quick course on signs and symptoms to look in a person having a stroke. I thanked her and quickly left.
Later that day my grandmother called the hospital to check on my father and Delani asked her if she was okay. It may not seem like much, but I am a firm believer in the saying "people do not have to be nice to you, so appreciate them when they do." Delani took great care of my father and included my family in every aspect of his care. She did not mind answering my questions, even took the time to explain until I completely understood. She is the epitome of an extraordinary nurse who goes over and beyond. I am very hard to impress, but Delani impressed me, and I am thankful for her service.
