My mom went into Truman Medical West Hospital to have carotid artery surgery. We were told there would be risks, but what we didn't know, was that for the next 16 days we would encounter an hour to hour struggle for my mom's life. This is where our ICU Angel, Lorie Hallier, was there to help.
I called her my hummingbird because she was so full of energy and her attention to detail was astonishing! Lorie made us feel like family. I think she even took on extra shifts just to be with my mom, I always enjoyed seeing her smiling face. Lorie was a comfort, a safe place when we didn't really know if Mom would live or not. She would give out her bear hugs readily, shed a tear with us, laugh out loud about the small victories and pray when asked to join. One day, I hadn't eaten much and with her knowing I didn't want to leave my mom's side, Lorie offered half of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich to me. I can't imagine how I would have gotten through those days without her. I can't find the words to tell you how much comfort she bought me and my family.
There were a couple of days when she had a trainee with her, I observed how skillful she was and how patient she was with the young person. She shared her knowledge and expertise when caring for her ICU patients. I can see why they asked Lori to train, she's just amazing and has such passion for what she does. My mom is now in rehab and doing quite well, all things considered. We never thought she would be alive, let alone be up and smiling and talking with us again. Thank you, Lorie.
