I was the CM for a patient with a terminal cancer diagnosis, and the patient's life expectancy was <1 week. Patient and her fiancée, who had been together for 17 years wished to marry before the patient discharged to home for hospice care. Their major issue was securing a marriage license and finding someone who could marry them. Kara took it upon herself to contact the courthouse and made arrangements for the license to be done in-house, contacted a JP who came and performed the ceremony. She was assisted by other members of the floor in decorating the unit with balloons, a "Just Married" sign and in attending the patient's wedding, alongside family and friends. She had the patient for 2 days, and provided compassionate care, concern and took the initiative to help a dying woman recognize the love of her life and accomplish the goal of getting married before she passed.
Kara has always been an asset whenever she has worked in the 4MRIU but today, she exceeded the expectations and truly treated the person, not just the patient in the bed, and her family with love and respect. It was a very bittersweet day but the marriage of these two will be a memory that no one working today will ever forget. Thank you, Kara.
