Irma took care of me and my baby and exceeded my expectations. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy on a Friday and on Saturday night I was having a hard time breastfeeding him. He did not want to be fed and just slept most of the time. I had high anxiety all night knowing that my one-day-old baby wouldn't eat at all, so my husband and I ended up not sleeping because we thought something was wrong with the baby. We felt helpless.
Sunday morning came and this nurse came into my room and introduced herself as Irma and asked me how everything was going. I told her that my baby hadn't been fed since midnight and I couldn't get him to eat. I did skin to skin and kept waking him up but still no success. I was very anxious and told Irma that I thought something was wrong with my baby and I needed to talk to the doctor. Then, Irma said with confidence, you have to trust me, and I will help you and teach you and your baby will eat. At first, I doubted her, but Irma was different. She stayed and spent her time teaching me the correct way to position my baby to get him to latch and eat and to my surprise, my baby started latching and eating. She is very patient and very knowledgeable in what she does and she's very caring. She eased the anxiety that my husband and I were feeling that day because we were about to be discharged. She was compassionate and very attentive to our needs and I wouldn't have been able to go home had she not been our nurse that day. Nurse Irma made a lasting impression on us and we will never forget her kindness and the excellent care she had provided us.
***
Irma exemplified nursing as a nurturer. She recognized the need in our room for holistic care and acted. She brought cheer and joy with her smile and excellent bedside rapport while providing my sister with the most beautiful and respectful; loving, in tune personal physical care. Health and wellness are multifaceted. Irma gave in every aspect and fully. She made the stay pleasant and peaceful. Bravo! She also practiced evidence-based care. She is an asset to Memorial Herman and to humanity.
