I recently had to have a thyroplasty revision and the second time around was more challenging. Surgery of any kind is traumatic, but this particular procedure is performed with local anesthetic and sedation. I felt more aware during this procedure than my first thyroplasty and I was feeling quite anxious by the time I was in the PACU.
Mary quickly recognized how I was feeling and immediately validated those feelings. She showed considerable empathy and compassion in her care of me. Being on complete vocal rest having someone not only recognize but put words to how I was feeling was truly amazing. She wiped my tears, reassured me repeatedly, and gave the beautiful gift of her presence. She even took great care to try to get the betadine off my face and ears so it wouldn't stain-which was another way of paying attention to detail.
I am sure that I wasn't her only patient during the time that I was in the PACU, but it never felt like I was left alone for long. I am incredibly grateful for her and the way that she helped me feel safe and cared for. Words don't really do justice to the excellent patient-centered care she provided and how much that care meant to me. As a mental health professional myself, I know how important presence, compassion, empathy, and validation are when someone has experienced trauma. Mary is the example of a nurse who has truly embraced the principles of trauma-informed care and is living them out. The world needs more nurses like Mary.
