Sandy admitted a young female patient suffering from advanced cancer to our community palliative program. This patient was clearly in need of hospice, but because of her age, she could not yet accept she was dying. She told Sandy, "I want to live."
Unfortunately, her battle with this disease was winning. Sandy told the husband to call her anytime. That evening around 9 pm Sandy received a call from a very distraught husband expressing they were ready for hospice and that his wife was suffering.
Sandy called her supervisor and received permission to clock in at 11 pm and proceed to admit this patient to hospice. Sandy was there for the family and the patient was made comfortable. Medications and equipment were ordered, and Sandy was their angel that night. The patient passed a few days later and the family including the young children were at peace.
MemorialCare Hospice is so blessed to have nurses like Sandy to help our community at the end of life. Thank you, Sandy, for your commitment to patient and family-centered care.
