During these unprecedented times, Lindsey was caring for a 90-year-old patient that had been battling COVID for over a week. He had progressively been weaker and did not want to fight anymore. His family decided to honor his wishes and provide him comfort measures.
Due to our visitor guidelines, only one family member can visit their dying loved one. His son came and spent time with him, face-timed with family and loved ones, so they could say their goodbyes. That evening Lindsey came on shift. She was very familiar with this patient as she had cared for him on her prior shifts. She took report and assessed her patients.
However, Lindsey took it a step further. She picked up her phone and sent the following text to the patient's son stating:
"This is Lindsey. I am your father's nurse tonight. I just want you to know I will take excellent care of him like he is my own family. I had him Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and grew attached to him. On my days off Sunday and Monday, I could not stop thinking about him. I texted nurses here to check on him. I do not want you to worry. I will keep him comfortable. I will update you on any changes or more frequently if you like."
Lindsey's gesture of humanity meant the world to his family. She remained at his bedside as his time grew to an end. She held his hand, played soothing music, and positioned him for comfort. The patient passed in the early hours with Lindsey at his side very peacefully. The family felt such comfort knowing he was in such kind hands. Lindsey truly displayed Humanity at work!
