In my eyes, Alexa is a superhuman nurse who always goes above and beyond for her patients. One evening in March, Alexa demonstrated compassionate care that went above and beyond. We all have patients who can be difficult at times and these patients are typically shared between nurses because it can be mentally and physically exhausting. It isn't often we see extreme family social situations on the FBC but Alexa had a patient and family that was particularly hard to deal with. There was frustration between the family members that caused voices to rise and security even came up to the floor more than once.
Alexa handled this situation with calm, compassionate care and treated this patient and family like they were her own family amidst the arguing and increasing tensions in the room. Alexa stayed strong in the room and broke down twice when no one was looking. She wiped the tears away and kept providing amazing care. The next day this patient requested to have Alexa back and without any hesitation, Alexa agreed. Alexa helped bring their baby into the world that night in a calm environment full of smiles and tears. I, as the CCL working that night, couldn't help but stand back and admire the courage and passion Alexa put into caring for this entire family. She truly lived out Sanford's mission by being dedicated to the health and healing of not only the patient but the family in this situation. I would also like to add that Alexa is new to being a labor nurse and this type of situation is usually hard for even seasoned nurses to handle due to the critical thinking that also goes into keeping the baby safe and monitored during the labor process. When you add in a social situation like this, it makes it extremely difficult both mentally and physically. Alexa is extraordinary and deserves to be recognized for her amazing care.
