I was receiving chemotherapy at a cancer facility. I had a severe allergic reaction to a steroid one gets with the chemo. Things got bad and I was taken to the Atrium Healthcare Main Hospital in Charlotte, NC, about a half-mile away from the Cancer Center. As things would go, I was treated and the reaction was handled, and I was admitted for further observation. Needless to say, I was exhausted, and it was now the middle of the night. I could hardly keep my eyes open, but it is dangerous for me to sleep without my BiPAP machine. The hospital's machines are not capable of my pressure and their masks don't fit my unique face. My nurse was Nicole DiMarco, BSN, RN and she treated me like I was the most important patient there. But what was truly amazing, on her own time, she took my keys and went to my car parked at the Cancer Center and brought back my BiPAP so that I could finally rest. Nicole's care was incredible throughout my stay. I had Nicole for two more days and her countenance never wavered. I wish others could understand just how much it meant to me in the middle of my battle with cancer. It truly made a difference in my attitude and determination.
