My friend, T, was visiting from Canada when she caught a cold which turned into bronchitis. As she is a renal patient, we visited the Urgent Care in Warrenton for diagnosis and treatment. She seemed to improve after an exam and discharge prescriptions. We were able to sightsee for one day in DC before she developed a terrible headache and vomiting. She couldn't keep anything down and couldn't take her large pack of drugs from Canada for her kidney failure. As an old registered nurse, I realized my friend was in trouble. By afternoon I called an ambulance to my home and requested they bring T to Warren Memorial Hospital ER. She got excellent care and diagnostic workup by Dr. Bin the ER. After bloodwork, CAT scan, chest x-ray, and rehydration via IV, T was admitted. She continued to be sick, despite many IV drug interventions. Tonya Lee, RN was her nurse on the unit. She immediately made both T and me comfortable with her calm professional manner. She used humor appropriately to lighten our concern over T and the potential financial burden and impact on T's flight home, scheduled in two days! Tonya explained all medicines and procedures to us and asked for T's understanding and consent. Tonya was comfortable and courteous with my many questions regarding her case and so respectable to both of us. She knew the IV site from the ambulance ride was looking angry and summoned the IV Access team expert, who used the doppler and found a tiny to vein to restart the IV. T was restricted to the use of only one arm for IV access as she is awaiting a kidney donor. Her care is very complex and Tonya and a nurse in Trail, BC conferred by long-distance call on T's orders, lab results, heparin as a new drug in her care, and got all the necessary questions answered. Tonya actively participated in T's discharge planning for her medications and plans for meds during her flight, as well as paperwork necessary for reimbursement by T's travel medical insurance.
