Claire represents all aspects of I-CARE! I have had the opportunity to work with Claire since 2011. She joined our team and became an integral part of Podiatry, as initially our sole nurse. She effectively manages so many areas of our department.
1. Integrity: If you ask Claire to complete a task or project, she will definitely complete the task, but more importantly you can trust she will follow-thru and make sure it is fully taken care of. You never have to wonder what happens because she is a person of her word.
2. Commitment: Claire is wholeheartedly here to take care of the Veterans. She is a kind and compassionate nurse who takes pride in caring for Veterans. She has a close connection with the Veterans and can relate easily so patients are comfortable.
3. Advocacy: "Serving the Vets" is her motto every day she comes to work. Countless times, Claire has initiated in escorting a Veteran to the appropriate service to take care of their problem. She recognizes when there is a problem and effectively troubleshoots before the problem escalates. Ex: Urgent Care, Mental Health, Homeless Clinic, and Primary Care.
4. Respect: Claire has respect for her fellow colleagues and patients.
5. Excellence: Claire strives to provide excellent care to Veterans. As a Clinical Nurse, she provides excellent care from assisting in surgical procedures to performing injections and blood draws, in addition, she is in charge of maintaining the clinics with ensuring we are following quality checks. She is always trying to find ways to improve our clinics so that we have the best service delivered to the Vets.

Claire is a great assistant in our procedure room. She is very organized and helpful during procedures. Claire does such a thorough job that it makes these procedures go smoothly and she keeps the patient comfortable and at ease (talking with them and ensuring they are stable). She frequently will work through lunch to help the Veteran going above and beyond her job. She always puts the Veterans first and will jump to assist any way that she can during the day. She works harder than most and does it with a smile.

Claire always has a smile and a friendly attitude even when it is stressful in the Clinic! Claire is always knowledgeable about the needs of the clinic staff and especially the patients. Even before someone made up the ICARE motto Claire was already demonstrating more than what the ICARE motto stands for. She truly cares about the Veterans and their families. She always goes beyond the ordinary to help. Whether it is getting them travel or food, or shelter, or help physically (i.e. emergencies) or emotionally as a Veteran or Family Member is struggling.
Many times Claire starts helping them, even before they know they need help. She really cares and loves people! Claire is the one person I can go to for help and direction, every time! If I want it to be done, I go to Claire! If I have a question, I go to Claire! If I need to be encouraged, I go to Claire! It is not just one example of why she is deserving of recognition, it is because of every day, she is an example of the caring actions all the time, every day, all day! She is a Real Jewel! Claire and I started on the same day in the Podiatry Department at Mather. From the beginning, Claire has been a take-charge kind of nurse who does what is required to get the job done. She works extra hours when patient care requires it. She goes out of her way to help the Department function as a unit. She has shown great leadership over the years and the Podiatry Department has grown to depend on her. She is a pleasure to work with and I'm proud to call her my friend.

Claire Cason has been a great source of knowledge and support for me as a provider and for the department in general for the last 4 years (my term of employment). She consistently goes out of her way to ensure patient safety, comfort, and thoroughness of care. She stands out daily as an education for her peers and various students rotating through the Podiatry Department.
Claire has a real passion for her job and consistently stays later to ensure patients receive complete care. I see her constantly teaching and nurturing young/starting LVNs to ensure they are confident in performing their tasks. Despite being at the VA for many years, she continues to have the zeal for academic and clinical improvement. I believe Claire makes a positive difference in the life of her coworkers and patients Daily! She is much appreciated!

Ever since Claire became the Podiatry Nurse the staff have relied heavily on Claire's courteous and efficient talents. Hardly a day goes by that Claire isn't needed, no matter what the issue. The most memorable moments that I cherish are upset or demanding patients, but Claire has a special way of defusing the situation. Somehow Claire senses she needs to intervene before the situation gets out of hand. It's usually after the situation has settled down that I find out Claire has Done it Again!
